The must-hear rap song of the day

A message pops on the screen during the opening seconds of the music video for Whoppa Wit Da Choppa’s “Viral”: “The following music video consists of Mr. Whop and friends enjoying quality time together…” That quality time includes cutting up pounds of weed on a plate with a fork and knife, aggressively making it rain in the strip club, executing combat rolls in a living room, and practicing their money spreads. While it’s obvious that Whoppa Wit Da Choppa is the most ridiculous and funniest rapper in this new wave of Jacksonville, Florida rap, I still keep asking myself, “Is it really funny?” His songs masquerade as goofy punchline marathons, but they’re almost exclusively heartless diss tracks. “Laced up my black Forces finna slide on yo’ street/I been watchin’ yo’ house all night like that bitch TV,” he raps. Yet underlying this joke and the others he tells is an unsettling seriousness that can make it hard to laugh.
With artists releasing songs at a fast and furious pace, it’s difficult for the average hip-hop head to keep track of it all—no matter how tapped in they are. That’s why we created The Ones, a daily post to highlight the song you need to hear.
Check out previous Ones, and listen to new rap from Whoppa Wit Da Choppa and more on our Spotify playlist.
