The problem with rap duos is that many of them aren’t really duos at all. Sometimes two rappers with similar sounds and themes get together to make a collaborative album, such as Lil Durk and Lil Baby with their overwhelmingly bland The Voice of the Heroes, but I wouldn’t go as far as to consider them a duo. Similarly, I don’t believe that the recent partnership between EST Gee and 42 Dugg is any different. Let’s be real—we all know that they’ve only joined together because they’re both under the umbrella of Yo Gotti’s red-hot CMG imprint. But nevertheless, the chemistry between the pint-sized Detroit storyteller and the Louisville-raised ex-linebacker is so obviously right. Check “Free the Shiners”: it actually sounds like they recorded the track in the same studio session. Dugg’s high-pitched chirps bounce off Gee’s menacing threats, one smoothly passing the baton to the other.

With artists releasing songs at a fast and furious pace, it’s difficult for the average hip-hop head to keep track of it all—no matter how tapped in they are. That’s why we created The Ones, a daily post to highlight the song you need to hear.
