My opinion on sample drill varies. When a producer flips a sample too familiar or obvious, the style seems played-out. But on the occasion that a song feels freshly absorbed into the drill sound, I’m excited again. “BODY,” from Sugar Hill, Harlem rapper Edot Baby, has me feeling like the latter. The Nonzo Beatz instrumental seamlessly interpolates Amaarae’s sweet crooning from her irresistible hit “SAD GIRLZ LUV MONEY.” At first, her vocals are chopped and slowed down, then once the pounding 808s enter the fray, the effect is stripped and her light coos sound like wind chimes swaying in the background. Other than the sample flip, I’m impressed by the unusually soft feel of the drill production—an interesting choice especially with the contrast of Edot Baby spitting like he’s in a bad mood.

With artists releasing songs at a fast and furious pace, it’s difficult for the average hip-hop head to keep track of it all—no matter how tapped in they are. That’s why we created The Ones, a daily post to highlight the song you need to hear.
