As a rapper, Defcee makes complexity sound as effortless as a daydream. His raps are poetic without being cryptic, and his nimble flow says as much about him as his lyrical references. On “Summer 06,” a standout track from his Boathouse-produced album For All Debts Private and Public, he details the sweaty awkwardness of summer love vivid moments, detailing how the confidence of Sean John cologne is negated by the quick avoidance of eye contact and a pep talk from the homies. “The same amount of game as a rain delay,” he summarizes, embarrassed but undeterred. He and guest SolarFive weave their respective encounters through the chimes, hand drums, and bass notes of Boathouse’s beat, fleshing out minor Ls that make for major stories.

With artists releasing songs at a fast and furious pace, it’s difficult for the average hip-hop head to keep track of it all—no matter how tapped in they are. That’s why we created The Ones, a daily post to highlight the song you need to hear.
