A majority of the club beats that have hit New York have sounded like knockoffs, but Bronx producer Cash Cobain, a catalyst of the sample-drill trend, taps into Newark-indebted bounce with natural ease on “Slizzy Like.” It makes sense—his drill-leaning production for rappers like B Lovee and Shawny Binladen has always had this dancey rhythm to it. Cobain turns up the BPM and adds in some of Jersey club’s signature flourishes, like the pulsing percussion and bite-sized vocal clips. He raps on it, too. His delivery is soothing and melodic even if it’s a bit one note. But like much of the raps over club beats so far, the vocals are just a touch to spice up the heart-racing production.

With artists releasing songs at a fast and furious pace, it’s difficult for the average hip-hop head to keep track of it all—no matter how tapped in they are. That’s why we created The Ones, a daily post to highlight the song you need to hear.
