Newark, New Jersey is one of the pivotal music cities on the East Coast. It’s been a home to jazz for many years; it’s where Jersey club originated; it’s the city that New York rappers go to when they start to get big. Bandmanrill is trying to spearhead a new movement in the city, and he’s got it popping with four consecutive singles where he lays drill flows over kinetic Jersey club beats (his latest one is a homage to his city).

To further his status as a hometown hero, Bandmanrill dropped a freestyle over “Tonight’s Da Night,” one of the essential tracks on the 1992 debut album of the celebrated Newark MC Redman. Over the timeless Erick Sermon beat, Bandmanrill’s delivery drips with that New York and Northern New Jersey cockiness. Rapping as if it’s not the first time he kicked it on this beat, he effortlessly reps where he’s from: “Look I’m from Jersey you gon’ rap or grab a jersey/You gon’ step up in them streets and you decide you think it’s worthy.”

With artists releasing songs at a fast and furious pace, it’s difficult for the average hip-hop head to keep track of it all—no matter how tapped in they are. That’s why we created The Ones, a daily post to highlight the song you need to hear.
