Columbia Records is the latest label to boast at least half of the Billboard Hot 100‘s top 10 in a single week, as five of its songs infuse the tier on the latest, Aug. 7-dated chart.
BTS‘ “Butter” leads the Hot 100 for a ninth week; Lil Nas X and Jack Harlow’s “Industry Baby” debuts at No. 2; The Kid LAROI and Justin Bieber’s “Stay” (on Columbia and Def Jam) repeats at No. 4, after reaching No. 3; Lil Nas X’s former leader “Montero (Call Me by Your Name)” holds at No. 8; and BTS’ fellow former No. 1 “Permission to Dance” places at No. 9.
In the past decade, Republic Records has achieved a leading 27 weeks with at least half of the Hot 100’s top 10, led by seven songs in the bracket on the chart dated July 14, 2018, all by Drake that week. Interscope Records has managed the feat six times and UMe and now Columbia have each earned it once in that span.
Before Columbia, Republic last landed the honor, when six Republic releases ranked in the top 10 of the Hot 100 dated March 20, 2021. Again, Drake paced the haul that week, when he made history as the first act ever to debut songs at Nos. 1 (“What’s Next”), 2 and 3 simultaneously.
As Lil Nas X adds the song that grants Columbia its share of half the Hot 100’s top 10, the label’s success atop the chart has been especially notable since he first reigned with his breakthrough smash “Old Town Road,” featuring Billy Ray Cyrus, for a record 19 weeks starting on the chart dated April 13, 2019. Columbia has posted 46 weeks atop the Hot 100 from that week through the latest list, the most of all labels. Since the start of 2021 alone, Columbia has led for 15 of the 32 Hot 100 chart weeks this year.
Columbia additionally controls the Billboard 200 and Billboard Global 200 charts dated Aug. 7. The Kid LAROI’s F*ck Love reaches the Billboard 200 summit for the first time and his and Bieber’s “Stay” scores its first week at No. 1 on the Global 200.
Bieber was also central to the last time that a label monopolized the top of the Hot 100, Billboard 200 and Global 200 simultaneously. On charts dated April 3, Def Jam dominated all the surveys, as Bieber’s album Justice launched atop the Billboard 200 and the set’s “Peaches,” featuring Daniel Caesar and Giveon, soared in atop the Hot 100 and Global 200, as well as the Global Excl. U.S. chart.
