Silent Friend is a historical drama written and directed by Ildikó Enyedi. Set in Marburg across 1908, 1972, and 2020, it follows three groups of people trying to understand plants, one another, and their place in the living world. A venerable ginkgo tree in a university botanical garden quietly connects the three stories.

What is Silent Friend about?

The 1908 strand centers on the university’s first female student. Shut out by many of the conventions around her, she discovers another way of looking at humble plants through photography. In 1972, a young student’s careful observation of a geranium changes both his scientific curiosity and his awkward attempts to connect with other people.

The contemporary story takes place during the 2020 pandemic. Tony, a neuroscientist visiting from Hong Kong, is stranded on the nearly empty campus. His work on how babies perceive the world leads him toward an unexpected experiment with the old ginkgo. He exchanges ideas remotely with plant specialist Alice Sauvage, played by Léa Seydoux. The film does not give the tree a human voice; its focus is the imperfect but persistent effort to recognize a form of perception unlike our own.

Cast and creative team

Tony Leung Chiu-wai plays Professor Tony, while Léa Seydoux appears as Alice. Luna Wedler leads the 1908 story, and Enzo Brumm is central to the 1972 chapter. The ensemble also includes Sylvester Groth, Martin Wuttke, Johannes Hegemann, Rainer Bock, and Marlene Burow.

Enyedi wrote and directed the film. Gergely Pálos served as cinematographer, Károly Szalai edited it, and Gábor Keresztes and Kristóf Kelemen composed the music. The Germany-France-Hungary-China co-production was mounted by Pandora Film, Inforg-M&M Film, Galatée Films, and Rediance.

Three timelines, one point of view

Each era has its own human conflict, but observation, scientific curiosity, and failed communication recur throughout the film. The ginkgo is more than a backdrop: its long lifespan provides a scale against which individual anxieties and social changes appear brief. That perspective lets the three stories echo one another without forcing them into a conventional plot.

Silent Friend is a deliberately meditative film that runs for roughly two and a half hours. The Venice festival listing gives a 145-minute runtime, while producer Galatée Films lists 2 hours 27 minutes, so catalogs may differ slightly. It screened in the Venezia 82 Competition in 2025. Viewers should expect an unhurried triptych about attention, science, and belonging rather than a straightforward drama driven by twists.
