Lana Del Rey Joins Local Band on Stage After Hearing Them Play Her Song: “Can’t Believe That Just Happened”

Live music brings unexpected moments — and on a recent night in Santa Barbara, one local act got an unforgettable surprise when Lana Del Rey stepped up to sing with them.

Fastest Kids in School were performing outdoors when Del Rey, who happened to be nearby, asked to join after recognizing them playing “West Coast” from her 2014 record Ultraviolence. A video the band shared on Instagram shows the singer dressed casually in a light jacket and jeans as she shares a microphone with guitarist Magic Jordan for the song’s chorus.

The band described the moment as deeply meaningful and wrote on social media that they felt honored by her impromptu appearance — calling it a show they will always remember.

Drummer Dan Grimes reflected on the encounter in a separate Instagram post, saying he was stunned and grateful. According to his account, Del Rey told them she had simply been out getting ice cream before deciding to stop by and sing along.

The spontaneous duet arrives more than a decade after Ultraviolence debuted in 2014 — Del Rey’s first No. 1 on the Billboard 200 — and after its single “West Coast” reached the upper reaches of the Hot 100.

Del Rey is currently working on a long-anticipated country project that she recently indicated will be called Stove, after previously mentioning other working titles. Over the same weekend she made the surprise appearance, she also marked her first wedding anniversary with husband Jeremy Dufrene by posting images from their September 26, 2024, Louisiana ceremony on Instagram.
