The creators of the blockbuster tested several options before finding a character that suited Peter Parker’s story.

Kevin Feige discussed the challenges of writing the script for Spider-Man: Brand New Day and finding a main adversary for Peter Parker. According to the head of Marvel Studios, the team considered several characters who could have served as the central antagonist during the early stages of production.

Warning! Spoilers for Spider-Man: Brand New Day follow below.

“One of the main changes during development was constantly the question: ‘Who is going to be the villain?’ First we had one option, then another, and then an incredibly obscure character that nobody had ever heard of appeared. That simply wasn’t satisfying.”

According to Feige, Tom Holland suggested using a different hero, but Marvel failed to secure the rights for their appearance. The team continued searching for a character whose conflict would help conclude Peter’s personal story following the events of No Way Home.

Jean Grey ultimately caught the creators’ attention. Feige explained that the character became a distinct reflection of Peter Parker, possessing immense power without anyone to help her manage her abilities.

“This is a young girl around Peter’s age, perhaps a bit younger. In every Spider-Man movie, Peter has had a mentor. Here, he meets someone with powers similar to his own, but she didn’t have Aunt May or anyone at all who could help or guide her.”

The creators were also interested in Jean’s early history before meeting Professor Xavier and joining the X-Men. Her uncontrolled abilities allowed the team to connect the character to the theme of Peter’s isolation after the events of No Way Home.

The idea fully crystallized following the proposal to cast Sadie Sink. According to Feige, the team immediately understood who the actress should play: “Okay, that’s Jean Grey. Let’s take her.”

Marvel has not yet confirmed Sink’s further appearances in the Cinematic Universe. Jean Grey is expected to become part of the new X-Men team, though the actress’s involvement in the upcoming franchise reboot or Avengers: Secret Wars has not been officially announced.
