On Friday afternoon (Aug. 20), Kendrick Lamar surprised fans with a lengthy message about his whereabouts and upcoming music. Titled “Nu Thoughts” on a website called Oklama.com, Lamar detailed his journey over the last few years and said he’s currently producing his “final TDE album.”
“I spend most of my days with fleeting thoughts. Writing. Listening. And collecting old Beach cruisers. The morning rides keep me on a hill of silence,” he began. “I go months without a phone. Love, loss, and grief have disturbed my comfort zone, but the glimmers of God speak through my music and family. While the world around me evolves, I reflect on what matters the most. The life in which my words will land next.”
Then, Lamar reassured fans that he’s working on new music and is proud of the “brotherhood” he established with his TDE family over the last 17 years.
“As I produce my final TDE album, I feel joy to have been a part of such a cultural imprint after 17 years. The Struggles. The Success. And most importantly, the Brotherhood. May the Most High continue to use Top Dawg as a vessel for candid creators. As I continue to pursue my life’s calling,” he says. “There’s beauty in completion. And always faith in the unknown. Thank you for keeping me in your thoughts. I’ve prayed for you all. See you soon enough.”
Lamar’s last solo album was his acclaimed 2017 effort DAMN. The project topped the Billboard 200 with a whopping 603,000 album-equivalent units in the opening week. He curated Black Panther: The Album the following year, which nabbed eight nominations at the 2019 Grammy Awards. Lamar has since been mum on the music front, but last year launched his new business venture pgLang, with longtime TDE collaborator Dave Free.
This November, Lamar will headline Day N Vegas Festival, where he’ll perform songs from Section.80 to DAMN.
