Kelly Clarkson’s ‘Hamilton Mixtape’ Cover Makes Superfan Mariska Hargitay Cry Every Time

There are Hamilton fans and then there are off-the-charts Hamilton uber fans. Law & Order: Special Victims Unit star Mariska Hargitay is definitely in the latter category. During a chat on Monday’s (May 10) The Kelly Clarkson Show, Hargitay revealed her gold-star level of fandom to the host while sharing that Kelly’s contribution to the HamiVerse brings her to tears every time.

Bragging that she might be second only to Rosie O’Donnell in her obsession with going Ham, Hargitay said she saw the Broadway version of the historical hip-hop musical 22 times, including on opening night. “I had this very profound experience because I was lucky enough to go opening night with my husband,” said Hargitay.

But, she added, the couple were so emotionally overwhelmed and weepy that they couldn’t pull it together to go to the premiere afterparty. “And what I want to tell you is that I had that Hamilton Mixtape on and I heard your rendition [of “It’s Quiet Uptown”] and I have to say … it slayed me and it affected me so deeply,” the actress said while welling up with tears as her voice cracked.

“To this day sometimes I prepare in acting listening to that if it’s a really emotional scene,” she said while Clarkson sat stunned. “I feel such an intimate connection with you on an artistic level and I just wanted to share that.”

“God, that made me feel really good!” the singer said with a big smile. “Best compliment of the year!”

The award-winning Lin-Manuel Miranda production announced on Tuesday (May 11) that it is returning to the Richard Rodgers Theatre in New York City when Broadway reopens Sept. 14. Broadway shut down in March 2020 as the coronavirus pandemic spread across the globe.
