Colombian star Karol G is set to headline the first of two Rockstar Summer Spotlight concerts available only on Billboard starting Monday (Aug. 30) at 6 p.m. ET.
An eight-time finalist at the 2021 Billboard Latin Music Awards, Karol G will take the virtual stage to perform some of her favorite songs from her chart-topping eclectic album KG0516, which was released in March and features female anthems such as “Bichota” and “200 Copas” and collaborations with Mariah Angeliq, Camilo and Ozuna. Karol G is also set to speak at Billboard Latin Music Week, which returns to Miami from Sept. 20-25.
The second Rockstar Summer Spotlight concert will feature dance star SAINt JHN.
“We’re thrilled to partner with Rockstar Energy to unite music lovers and celebrate Billboard’s chart-topping artists,” said Julian Holguin, president of Billboard. “Rockstar Energy’s commitment to creating unforgettable experiences, combined with Billboard’s passion for connecting fans to their favorite music, will undoubtedly deliver one of the biggest moments of the summer and allow virtual attendees to really live like rock stars.”
“We’re excited to bring Rockstar Energy fans exclusive access to Karol G and SAINt JHN, who fully embody the Rockstar hustle. This summer concert series with Billboard is the perfect way to connect our fans with an interactive and one-of-a-kind experience from artists they love,” said Fabiola Torres, PepsiCo chief marketing officer and senior vice president of the Energy Category.
You can watch Karol G’s performance here starting at 6 p.m. ET on Monday.
For now, here’s what to expect from her Rockstar Summer Spotlight set:
The set is an ode to her latest album, KG0516
Karol G’s Rockstar Summer Spotlight set is an ode to KG0516, with which she scored her first No. 1 on Billboard’s Top Latin Albums chart (dated April 10) – boasting the biggest week by a female act since 2017. The title of the 16-track set is meant to represent a flight number inspired by May 16, the date Karol’s parents signed her first-ever music contract because she was underage back in 2006.
Written and recorded entirely during the pandemic, “Each song represents a different emotion,” Karol G previously Billboard. “‘El Barco’ is based on a story that most women have experienced at some point, and that’s why they can identify with the lyrics [‘You turned your back, but the boat left; and your photos I threw away; since I did, everything that was black and white now has color…’].”
A rockstar attitude
Wearing an all-black outfit – leather pants styled with silver chains – Karol G will step into the spotlight with a four-piece all-female band in tow. Setting the vibe for a rock-star show, the band will rock out in a 30-second intro with drums and an electric bass leading the way. In the background, you’ll hear “Bichota’s” chorus: “To’ me quieren partir … Roncan, pero no pueden con mi pum-pum.”
Dream set list
“Bichota” – Karol G will perform the Ovy on the Drums-produced “Bichota,” which was released back in October and peaked at No. 3 on Billboard‘s Hot Latin Songs chart.
“Ay, DiOs Mío!” – Co-written by Karol G and Danny Ocean, the reggaeton-pop anthem was released Summer 2020. It peaked at No. 5 on Hot Latin Songs.
“El Barco” – A song that dwells on love and loss, Karol G will perform the melancholic, bachata-tinged “El Barco.” The song peaked at No. 19 on Hot Latin Songs.
“DVD” – She’ll end the Billboard set with her slowed-down reggaeton track “DVD.”
