Are we going to hear a new Kanye West and The Weeknd collaboration on Donda?
The rapper seems to have hinted at that possibility when he posted a screenshot of a call log via Instagram on Monday (Aug. 2), which revealed three calls with the R&B/pop superstar in the after hours, with time stamps at 1:14 a.m. and 2:17 a.m. Ye tagged his longtime producer Mike Dean on the photo, who shared it on his own Instagram account as well and wrote, “IF I DONT ANSWER U SEE WHY #DONDA @KANYEWEST.”
The Weeknd’s manager Wassim “Sal” Slaiby also stoked the flames on the suspected collab by commenting underneath Dean’s post with two red letter emojis symbolizing the XO label.
While Dean is too busy to come to the phone right now, West might be able to answer fan theories on Thursday during Kanye West Presents the Donda Album Release. The rapper will take over Atlanta’s Mercedes-Benz Stadium — where he has already set up temporary living quarters as he wraps up his 10th studio LP — to preview the album a week after its original listening event, which teased high-profile collabs with Jay-Z, Lil Baby, Roddy Ricch, Baby Keem and many more.
Maybe The Weeknd will be added to the lineup in the coming days. The two last collaborated on “FML” from West’s 2016 album The Life of Pablo. West also co-wrote “Tell Your Friends” on The Weeknd’s 2015 album Beauty Behind the Madness. West’s latest post arrives on the same day as The Weeknd’s GQ cover story, where he expressed his desire to hop back in the studio with the rapper/producer again. “I’d love to work with Kanye again. Especially on production,” he said.
The album Donda, named after West’s late mother, was originally expected on July 23, but is now slated to drop Aug. 6.
