Some young superstars in the making shined bright this week with their debut releases, as well as one streaming reissue.
The 23-year-old singer Chlöe Bailey, known mononymously as Chlöe and representing one-half of R&B duo Chloe x Halle, carves a braggadocios pop lane for herself on her debut solo single, “Have Mercy,” and its accompanying bootylicious music video.
Rising rapper-singer-producer Baby Keem, 20, makes a name for himself separate from that of his cousin Kendrick Lamar — who is featured on “Range Brothers” and “Family Ties” — on his debut studio album The Melodic Blue, which showcases the star’s marathon on an artistic spectrum throughout the entire project and at times explicitly displays his versatility within a singular track.
While the beloved singer Aaliyah, who tragically died at age 22 in plane accident in 2001, already topped the Billboard 200 with her eponymous third album 20 years ago, Aaliyah‘s arrival on streaming services marks a pivotal moment for contemporary R&B listeners who are getting reacquainted or introduced to the groundbreaking body of work.
