Justin Bieber & Kid LAROI Jumpstart 2021 VMAs With ‘Stay’ & ‘Ghost’

The Kid LAROI, Justin Bieber

Justin Bieber and The Kid LAROI made a sky-high entrance for their joint performance at the 2021 MTV Video Music Awards Sunday (Sept 12). The duo dropped into the Barclays Center stage in Brooklyn by being lowered from the stadium’s ceiling onto a huge white mountain ridge.

Bieber and The Kid LAROI kicked off with their collaboration “Stay,” with the 18-year-old taking center stage to start. Bieber joined in on the energetic performance later, dressed in an oversized black hoodie that he kept over his head, and denim overalls.

After “Stay” — which peaked at No. 1 on the Billboard Hot 100 and has spent eight weeks on the chart — the stage darkened, and Bieber kneeled. As purple lights flashed against a black background, the 27-year-old pop superstar launched into the aching “Ghost” off this year’s Justice.

The performance marks Bieber’s first return to the VMAs stage in six years. He last performed “What Do You Mean?” at the 2015 show. The set was rising star Kid LAROI’s first at the VMAs.

Bieber leads in nominations at the 2021 MTV Video Music Awards with seven nods. Among them are video of the year, artist of the year, and best collaboration. The Kid LAROI is up for two: best new artist and push performance of the year.

The 2021 VMAs — which are celebrating their 40th year — were broadcast live from Brooklyn’s Barclays Center. Doja Cat hosted the show.
