Judas Will Be “Radically Different” — BioShock Creator Promises Innovations

When Judas was first revealed in 2022, many players felt the game bore a strong resemblance to BioShock. Ken Levine has once again emphasized a mix of firearms and superhuman abilities set against a dystopian sci‑fi backdrop that calls to mind Rapture and Columbia.

However, the developer stresses that despite the clear parallels, several elements of the new project will be “radically different.” Levine discussed this in an interview with MrMattyPlays on YouTube, where they talked about AI in games, three decades of industry evolution, and the aspects that will shape the Judas experience.

Levine said, “There are parts of Judas that feel more like BioShock, but there are also radically different aspects.” He explained: “Players have already noticed: a weapon in one hand, abilities in the other. We have an additional hacking mechanic that hasn’t been shown much yet. But the way the game unfolds, how relationships are formed, the world design, encounters and the branching of paths — all of that is fundamentally new.” Levine added, “This is probably the biggest shift since BioShock.”

Details about those “radical” changes remain scarce for now. It appears some innovations will emerge in the storytelling: the narrative is being assembled like “narrative Lego,” with key moments distributed throughout the game depending on player choices. The team hopes that missing a few beats won’t disrupt the overall experience for players.

Judas does not yet have a release date, but Levine has already confirmed several features: inspiration from the Nemesis system in Middle-earth: Shadow of Mordor to forge emotional bonds with a small cast of characters, and an “old-school” approach — a full game purchase with no microtransactions. The team’s decisions are guided by a focus on narrative and immersion.
