Jon Bernthal Thriller Sicario Becomes Streaming Hit on Max

Jon Bernthal is enjoying a major career year. Between roles in The Odyssey and Spider-Man: Brand New Day, the actor remains an in-demand supporting star. Fans are rediscovering performances that established him as a character actor, from The Punisher and Daredevil appearances to The Walking Dead, Ford v Ferrari, King Richard, and FX’s The Bear.

One of Bernthal’s crime thrillers is finding a new life. A 121-minute action masterpiece has become a streaming hit on HBO Max more than a decade after its theatrical release.

Sicario is climbing the HBO Max charts

Denis Villeneuve’s 2015 crime thriller Sicario is making a comeback. After landing on HBO Max earlier this month, the Taylor Sheridan-penned thriller ranks as the seventh most-watched movie on the platform in the United States according to third-party streaming tracker FlixPatrol.

Written by Taylor Sheridan of Yellowstone fame, Sicario stars Emily Blunt as FBI agent Kate Macer. She joins a covert government task force led by CIA agent Matt Graver, played by Josh Brolin, to target a powerful Mexican drug cartel along the U.S.-Mexico border. Kate questions her beliefs while working alongside Alejandro Gillick, played by Benicio del Toro. Bernthal appears in a supporting role as Ted, Kate’s police officer boyfriend.

Sicario remains a thriller thanks to its cast.

Will Jon Bernthal ever return to the Sicario franchise?

When released in 2015, Sicario earned a 91% critics score on Rotten Tomatoes and three Academy Award nominations for Best Cinematography, Best Original Score, and Best Sound Editing. The 2018 sequel, Sicario: Day of the Soldado, reunited Benicio del Toro and Brolin without Blunt.

A third installment titled Sicario: Capos has been in development for several years. Producers have expressed hope of reuniting Blunt, del Toro, and Brolin. Bernthal’s character is not central to the franchise, making a return unlikely.

The film’s streaming success shows that Bernthal’s supporting performance remains memorable.
