John Mayer Has Top ‘Rock’ Album, Clairo Rules Alternative Albums

John Mayer scores his record-breaking eighth No. 1 on Billboard‘s Top Rock Albums chart, while Clairo claims her first leader on Alternative Albums, both on the tallies dated July 31.

Mayer’s Sob Rock opens at No. 1 on Top Rock Albums with 84,000 equivalent album units earned (61,000 in album sales) in its first week, ending July 22, according to MRC Data.

With eight rulers, Mayer passes Bruce Springsteen for the most in the history of Top Rock Albums, which began in 2006. He first reigned with Continuum in 2006 and had last led with The Search for Everything in 2017.

Sob Rock concurrently crowns Americana/Folk Albums, marking Mayer’s fifth No. 1. It boasts the most weekly units on the chart since Chris Stapleton‘s Starting Over debuted atop the Nov. 28, 2020, survey with 103,000. On the all-format Billboard 200, Sob Rock bows at No. 2, where its Mayer’s 10th top 10. Eight have hit the top two, with three reaching three No. 1, starting with Heavier Things in 2003.

Seven of the 10 songs on Sob Rock appear on the latest Hot Rock & Alternative Songs chart, led by “Shot in the Dark” at No. 14. (The album’s other three songs charted as preview tracks in 2018-19.)

Meanwhile, Clairo’s sophomore full-length Sling starts at No. 1 on Alternative Albums with 21,000 units. It follows the No. 4 debut and peak of Immunity in August 2019. Sling bows at No. 2 on Top Rock Albums, her best showing (after Immunity peaked at No. 9) and arrives as her premiere top 20 title on the Billboard 200, bowing at No. 17.

One Sling track concurrently graces Hot Rock & Alternative Songs: “Amoeba,” at No. 32. A previous release from the album, “Blouse,” reached the same position in June.

Clairo also notches her first week in the Billboard Artist 100‘s top 40, re-entering at No. 40.
