Jazmine Sullivan, one of the most gifted vocalists in R&B, waited six years before returning in early 2021 with her majestic album Heaux Tales. On Sunday night (June 27), Sullivan showcased her latest full-length, as well as a just-released new single, with some very special guests at the 2021 BET Awards.
At the top of Sullivan’s performance, California congresswoman Maxine Waters took the stage to act out her “reclaiming my time” speech that Sullivan samples on her new single, “Tragic.” That track received its riveting live debut, and afterwards, Sullivan was joined onstage by Ari Lennox for a vocal duel to their shared Heaux Tales highlight, “On It.”
Sullivan entered the 2021 BET Awards as a nominee for best female R&B/pop artist, while Heaux Tales is nominated for album of the year. The follow-up to 2015’s Reality Show peaked at No. 4 on the Billboard 200 chart.
