Jason Schreier: Sony Canceled Physint Over Budget Concerns Amid Kojima Productions Deal
Sony may have declined to fund Physint due to Hideo Kojima’s high budget demands for the game, leading the project to move to Microsoft after the split.
According to Jason Schreier from Bloomberg, negotiations between Sony and Kojima Productions lasted for several months and covered the budget, timelines, partnership extension, and exclusivity. The parties failed to reach an agreement, after which PlayStation walked away from the project.
During a trip to Japan, several industry representatives asked Schreier about the amount Kojima requested for Physint:
I haven’t confirmed the sum I heard about, but it was truly significant.
At the same time, the journalist noted that Microsoft is likely funding the game with a smaller amount:
It seems to me that Xbox is paying less than Kojima expected from PlayStation.
Schreier previously reported that Sony was concerned about expenses, development pace, and exclusivity terms. PlayStation would have funded the game without owning the rights to the franchise, as Physint belongs to Kojima Productions.
The project is currently supported by Xbox, and Bill Skarsgård will star in the lead role. The game is in the early stages of development.
