Insomniac Confirms Marvel’s Wolverine Is Set Before The X-Men Exist
Insomniac Confirms Marvel’s Wolverine Predates the Formation of the X-Men

With Insomniac’s highly anticipated Marvel’s Wolverine hitting PlayStation 5 shelves on September 15, excitement is mounting. Yet, despite recent trailers and a brief glimpse at gameplay during the summer showcase, the game’s narrative framework remains largely shrouded in mystery. A fresh interview with Entertainment Weekly has finally provided some clarity, confirming that players will be stepping into a timeline where the X-Men have yet to assemble.
According to the developers, while the public is aware of vigilantes like Spider-Man, mutants are forced to exist on the fringes of society. Their presence is met with either profound fear or, in more extreme cases, targeted eradication. In this volatile landscape, Logan finds himself operating as an operative for Team X—a covert black-ops unit dedicated to ensuring the survival of the mutant species.

This “pre-team” setting aligns with the solitary nature of Wolverine seen in promotional material. Even the appearance of Jean Grey—who is noticeably absent of any team uniform—suggests a world where the iconic academy and superhero squad have not yet come to fruition. While some fans may feel a pang of disappointment at the lack of the classic X-Men dynamic, it serves as a compelling origin point that could lay the groundwork for future installments.
The status of Team X remains a focal point of speculation. With adversaries like Lady Deathstrike, Sabretooth, Omega Red, and Mystique all confirmed to appear, it is unclear if they are former allies turned enemies or simply independent threats. Given the visceral combat showcased in recent trailers, it is a safe bet that Logan will be crossing paths—and blades—with many of them.
Beyond the plot, the interview highlighted actor Liam McIntyre’s immersive approach to portraying the iconic character. To capture Logan’s raw, animalistic intensity, McIntyre studied the behavior of predatory dogs, an approach his colleagues described as genuinely unsettling. “It’s a bit scary to lean that far into the character,” McIntyre noted, emphasizing that the supportive environment at Insomniac allowed him to take significant creative risks.
