Immersive ‘Festive Funeral’ Performance Featuring Tokimonsta & More Debuts This Fall

Opening next month in Los Angeles, a groundbreaking immersive installation delves into themes of collective sorrow, unity, and modern existence, accompanied by an original score composed by Tokimonsta, Boreta (Justin Boreta of The Glitch Mob), and El Búho. This sonic tapestry also interweaves selections by Jean-Michel Jarre, Andrew Bird, Air, Rival Consoles, and Kiasmos.

Dubbed The Cortège, this three-hour odyssey guides participants through distinct chapters. It begins with an al fresco marketplace complemented by live hang-drum and cello performances. As twilight falls, an hour-long processional unfolds, featuring choreographed movement, archetypal costuming, drone apparitions, puppetry, robotics, and interactive participation.

Conceived by Visomnia—the creative studio led by Oakland artist Jeff Hull—and production partner Brilliant Work, The Cortège draws inspiration from Carl Jung’s concept of the collective unconscious. The experience invites reflection on mythic pageantry, solace, celebration, renewal, and both communal and personal rites of mourning.

The journey culminates in a serene tea salon, where a rotating roster of DJs—including Carlos Niño; Superposition (the Boreta & Matthew Davos duo behind the Grammy-nominated Form//Less); Nailah Hunter; Secular Sabbath; Alan Watts Org; Living Earth; and additional artists to be announced—will spin ambient and experimental sets.

The Cortège premieres at The Cricket Field at the Los Angeles Equestrian Center from September 11 through 28 (Thursdays–Sundays). Tickets start at $87 and are available now. For more information and to reserve your place, visit thecortege.co.
