‘I’m a Romantic,’ JD Vance Says as He Cheers on Taylor Swift and Travis Kelce’s Engagement

When it comes to romance, JD Vance proves an enthusiast. Although he and Taylor Swift occupy opposite ends of the political spectrum, the vice president nonetheless extended his warmest congratulations upon learning of her engagement to Travis Kelce.

Speaking with USA Today at the White House on Wednesday, August 27, Vance said he fully supports the newly engaged couple, who announced their plans to wed the previous day. “I’m a romantic at heart when I witness two people in love committing to marriage,” he shared.

“I just wish them the best and offer my congratulations,” Vance added. “May they enjoy a long, healthy, and joyful life together.”

However, the former senator noted that, generally speaking, the public prefers politicians to concentrate on policy matters while celebrities focus on the talents that made them famous—whether that’s singing, dancing, or acting.

Interestingly, former President Donald Trump has repeatedly engaged with pop culture icons like Swift during his administrations—figures Vance might argue should remain outside political discourse. Over the past year, Trump has both ridiculed Swift for the boos she received at the 2025 Super Bowl and declared on Truth Social, “I HATE TAYLOR SWIFT,” yet he still offered his congratulations when he heard of her engagement to the Kansas City Chiefs star.

“I wish them much luck,” the twice-impeached president remarked in a cabinet meeting the day their engagement was announced. “He’s an excellent player and a stand-up guy, and she’s a wonderful person.”

Neither the president nor his vice president were the only voices celebrating the celebrity pair’s engagement. When Swift and Kelce released images of his rose-garden proposal and her lavish diamond ring, reactions poured in from fans and friends alike—and even from skeptics like Megyn Kelly.

“I’m not a Taylor Swift fan for various reasons, but I admire the empire she’s built,” the Megyn Kelly Show host penned on her website. “As an American billionaire under 40, it’s wonderful she’s found love. I sincerely root for their happiness. It’s fitting she chose a man who’s a football star, a no-nonsense individual who stands his ground.”
