How the Director of Motor City Created the Year’s Most Unique Revenge Thriller
Following a protracted twenty-year incubation period, Motor City has finally arrived on the silver screen. Centering on Alan Ritchson as a former Army Ranger seeking vengeance after being unjustly imprisoned, the film conveys its gripping narrative almost entirely without dialogue. Instead, it relies on kinetic performances, striking visual motifs, and a curated classic rock soundtrack that functions as a core narrative vehicle.

Polygon sat down with filmmaker Potsy Ponciroli to discuss finally realizing this long-gestating project, working alongside Ritchson, Shailene Woodley, and Ben Foster, structuring pivotal sequences around iconic tracks like "Nights in White Satin" and "The Chain," and why his ultimate directorial advice to performers often boils down to: "The first person to speak usually loses." (We also managed to squeeze in a brief query regarding his involvement in the prospective Goonies sequel.)

Polygon: Motor City spent nearly twenty years in development purgatory before finally making it to cameras. How did this opportunity land in your lap?

Potsy Ponciroli: It came to me through my representation. Scripts circulate constantly, but this one resonated deeply because the premise was remarkably fresh and well-crafted by Chad St. John [writer of Peppermint and London Has Fallen]. Over the years, numerous filmmakers and stars were attached, but schedules shifted or financing fell apart.

When I initially received it, I pitched my vision and made it to the final round, ultimately losing out to another filmmaker. Even so, the story lingered in my mind.

Fast forward seven or eight months, and my agent called to tell me the previous director had stepped away. I immediately contacted Jon Berg, the producer, requesting another shot since I had carried the project in my head for months. He agreed.

My pitch to Jon and fellow producer Greg Silverman was the strongest of my career, largely due to having had ample time to refine my perspective. They arranged a meeting with Alan [Ritchson], who was already committed. I cut a family vacation short, did a Zoom call with Alan, finalized my contract over the weekend, and started work on Monday. It moved at lightning speed once it came back around, and I was grateful for the redemption.

Given the scarcity of spoken lines, how did you guide your cast to express such profound internal states through physical movement and emotional nuance?

I deliberately avoided pantomime. We weren't interested in exaggerating gestures simply to sell a moment; everything had to remain grounded and authentic.

That philosophy dictates my entire approach to filmmaking. It stems from endless foundational conversations prior to shooting, truly dissecting the psychology of each persona.

Shailene [Woodley] immediately asked, "What's my playlist?" I loved that initiative, so we extended the concept to every principal character to establish their inner world beforehand.

We built collaborative Spotify playlists, continuously adding and curating tracks to define her character's tastes. It helped her visualize distinct phases of her life—what she’d listen to while journaling quietly in the afternoon versus an energetic evening gathering. That auditory anchor really unlocked the mood of the role.

From there, we facilitated constant communication between individual actors and the ensemble as a whole. By the time we stepped onto the set, rigorous preparation intersected with absolute creative freedom.

Did the minimalist script ultimately serve as a major draw for the performers—offering them an entirely fresh acting challenge?

Everyone eagerly embraced the premise. Take the diner sequence featuring Shay and Ben [Foster], portraying estranged lovers attempting reconciliation. It spans over four intense minutes—how do you navigate that emotional terrain without uttering a single word?

My primary note to them was simple: "When you're in a conflict with someone you care about, the first person to speak invariably loses. Nobody wants to break the silence." They immediately understood the assignment, playing off each other's subtle shifts with incredible results.

So yes, that artistic constraint was a massive selling point. It offered an unconventional arena they rarely get to explore.

How did you select the musical accompaniment? Were certain songs locked in from day one, or did they evolve organically during post-production?

It was a hybrid process. “Nights in White Satin” was designated for the prison break sequence from the very start; I effectively edited that scene on paper before we even rolled cameras, scripting specific cuts to match the cadence of the song. We eventually had to re-edit a section slightly to land the emotional crescendo when the vehicle smashes through the gate. My editor, Joe Galdo, shares my passion for this musical era. We'd test dozens of tracks late into the night. With “The Chain,” we had cut a sequence and tested various options until Joe surprised me the next morning, leaving his rough cut untouched and asking me to watch it.

He dropped “The Chain” into the timeline, and all the organic musical breaks and tempo shifts aligned with the visual cuts entirely by serendipity. It instantly became irreplaceable.

As for “Cat People (Putting Out Fire),” Ben Foster deserves full credit because he brought a boombox to set to maintain his character's headspace. While he insists he didn't play it on a loop, that song became the auditory touchstone I envisioned for him. It captured the exact grit and atmosphere we were chasing, setting the perfect tone right from the opening moments.

With dialogue stripped away, the audience relies heavily on visual cues like tattoos, clippings, and photographs. Were those narrative beats scripted, or did they materialize on set?

It varied. Elements like the newspaper clippings were part of the initial text, but we encountered several narrative roadblocks regarding how to transition out of scenes without verbal exposition.

One major hurdle was the café sequence with Ben McKenzie and Shailene, where McKenzie’s character needed to place a ring on the table and communicate that Ritchson had been framed.

Solving that visually required ingenuity. My Director of Photography, John Matysiak, and I scoured New Jersey until we found a striking, high-end café featuring a live piano player [portrayed by Jack White]. We realized we could pull the camera back and capture the confrontation from the oblique perspective of the pianist.

That vantage point allowed us to bypass conventional dialogue blocking entirely, witnessing the exchange from an outsider's lens. Solutions like that were discovered in the moment, whereas details like the Ranger tattoos were anchored in the script from day one.

Across your feature filmography, you've directed an incredible roster of talent—Tim Blake Nelson, Joseph Gordon-Levitt, Lily James, and now this cast. What have these collaborations taught you as a storyteller?

Seek out phenomenal actors and place your absolute trust in them. I've been remarkably fortunate with the collaborators who've said yes to my projects. Committing months of your life to a shared vision requires immense mutual trust because things can easily diverge. Finding artists who are eager to experiment, deeply patient, kind, and fully invested in the creative trenches makes the journey an absolute privilege.

Tim Blake Nelson has returned for multiple projects because we've developed a genuine friendship. In fact, Shay and I were attempting to mount a different collaboration when this script crossed my desk. I called her at 8:00 AM on a Saturday, telling her, "I've got a new movie. It's set in 1970s Detroit. And there's no dialogue."

Her initial reaction was disbelief, but after I sent it over, she called me back two and a half hours later saying, "I have to do this. How do I get involved?" I simply told her to let the producers make the offer.

Beyond that, my advice is simply to abandon any preconceptions about the lack of dialogue. It isn't a gimmick; it's an intentional narrative grammar designed to convey this journey. Commit to the experience, put the phones away, view it in the largest, loudest theater possible, and allow yourself to be completely absorbed.

It’s a tightly paced, 96-minute thrill ride that leaves you walking out exhilarated by the dramatic momentum.

Earlier this year, news broke that you are scripting Goonies 2. Given how deeply cherished the original remains, how do you approach a sequel to such a sacred text without simply trying to carbon-copy its magic?

That is treacherous territory—I already got into trouble in Venice just mentioning it! The original is my all-time favorite film; it's the specific reason I entered this industry, having watched it countless times as both a child and an adult. The sense of pure adventure and wonder it evokes is singular. The kid inside me was electrified by the prospect, but truthfully, that's about all I can say on the matter.
