Onimusha: Way of the Sword proudly serves as the latest title to grace the cover of Game Informer. Having spent several hours hands-on with previously unseen sections of the game, I can safely say it stands out as one of the most compelling upcoming releases on my radar. The fact that it marks the franchise's glorious return after a staggering 20-year hiatus only heightens the excitement, breathing new life into a beloved series many fans feared had been permanently shelved by Capcom. Adding to the intrigue is the choice of legendary historical swordsman Miyamoto Musashi as the protagonist—a daring yet inspired direction for a series already known for iconic leads.

While casting a historic samurai icon like Musashi might seem like a natural fit for an action epic, Capcom's motivation went far deeper. The development team carefully analyzed his legendary life and the surrounding folklore, tailoring his historical traits to directly influence the core gameplay mechanics of Way of the Sword.

"When brainstorming legendary samurai and sword masters for the narrative, Musashi naturally rose to the top of the list," shares Director Satoru Nihei. "Upon diving deeper into his actual history, we discovered accounts of him utilizing any available tactical advantage—including manipulating his surroundings—to secure victory. We realized these historical attributes would translate brilliantly into modern gameplay, introducing innovative mechanics. Furthermore, because Musashi is fiercely determined to rise to greatness purely through his own physical capabilities, pairing him with a mystical gauntlet he fundamentally resents creates a fascinating dynamic, contrasting sharply with our previous protagonists."

Although he has yet to adopt his signature dual-wielding stance—given that this iteration portrays him in his younger years before that fighting style was forged—Musashi’s historical ruthlessness heavily inspires the game's combat philosophy. When it comes to leveraging the environment, Musashi thinks nothing of grabbing a wooden pallet to deflect incoming volleys of arrows before violently kicking it into nearby Genma demons to seize the offensive. After all, traditional notions of honor fly out the window when battling otherworldly horrors. Players can even punt massive transport carts directly into groups of foes for devastating crowd-control openings.

During my session exploring Dokyo's subterranean laboratory in Kyoto, I gleefully exploited explosive barrels to thin out demonic hordes. This glimpse into environmental warfare leaves me eager to see how else stage hazards can be manipulated to crush opposition.

Discussing how Musashi stacks up against past series leads, Nihei highlights his sheer reluctance to wield the Oni Gauntlet. While Samanosuke in Onimusha: Warlords embraced his artifact to rescue a royal, and Onimusha 2's Jubei harnessed demonic forces to thwart Nobunaga, Musashi simply wants the cursed thing off his arm. His motivation for using it to slaughter demons is purely out of necessity—he views it as the only viable path forward through endless waves of Genma. Ultimately, the gauntlet serves as an unwelcome distraction from his ultimate ambition to become Japan's premier swordsman. Nihei playfully compares the situation to an elite athlete being forced to use performance-enhancing drugs; Musashi would rather earn his reputation strictly on his own merits.

Visually, Capcom modeled Musashi after the late, legendary Japanese actor Toshiro Mifune, who famously immortalized the samurai in director Hiroshi Inagaki's celebrated 1950s Samurai Trilogy (*Samurai I: Musashi Miyamoto*, *Samurai II: Duel at Ichijoji Temple*, and *Samurai III: Duel at Ganryu Island*). This continues the series' tradition of casting star power, following Samanosuke's likeness to Takeshi Kaneshiro and Jubei's modeling after the late Yūsaku Matsuda.

Stay tuned as we peel back more layers on Capcom's fresh interpretation of Musashi, including insights into how Mifune's likeness was successfully brought to life.
