Hildur Gudnadóttir, who won an Oscar, Golden Globe and Grammy for composing the music for the 2019 blockbuster Joker, is undertaking a new adventure for her latest project: She is scoring her first video game.

Gudnadóttir and composer Sam Slater are writing the music for Battlefield 2042, the latest entry in the first-person shooter video game franchise from Electronic Arts and DICE, out Oct. 22.

“We are thrilled to be writing our first video game score for Battlefield 2042, and teaming with Electronic Arts,” said Gudnadóttir and Slater in a statement. “It was such a deeply creative experience to dive into this world and create a truly unique and disruptive musical environment for the game.”

Battlefield 2042 drops players into a near-future war experience, allowing matches for up to 128 players through several different combat experiences.

“From the very beginning, Hildur and Sam set out to craft a score like no other, in which music and sound design meld to create an extraordinary soundscape experience,” said Steve Schnur, president of music for Electronic Arts. “I can say unequivocally that the original score for Battlefield 2042 is the most significant cinematic achievement in the franchise and an absolute game changer for the medium.”

Gudnadóttir and Slater have a track record of collaborating. While they are co-composing the music for Battlefield 2042 jointly, Slater previously served as the score producer for two other Gudnadóttir projects — Joker and the HBO series Chernobyl, for which they both won Grammy Awards.

Lakeshore Records will release the Battlefield 2042 score digitally, while Lakeshore and Invada Records are pairing for a vinyl release.
