The Voice crowned its season 20 champion on Tuesday night (May 25) during a jam-packed two-hour finale that featured a cavalcade of guest stars and performers capping yet another win for coach Blake Shelton as his 19 year-old protege, Cam Anthony, ended the night victorious.
But before Shelton added another notch as winningest coach in Voice history — that’s eight so far if you’re counting, Adam Levine — viewers were treated to a glittery showcase of songs from coaches past and present, as well as some very special moments from Kelsea Ballerini, OneRepublic, Lauren Daigle, Snoop Dogg and DJ Battlecat, Justin Bieber, Thomas Rhett and, yes, Levine, who took the stage with Maroon 5.
OneRepublic singer Ryan Tedder made his way through the crowded Voice studio for a run through his band’s hand-clapping new single, “Run,” getting assists from masked staffers and a dance troupe of lookalikes along the way.
Former coach Gwen Stefani slipped into a two-tone Cruella de Vil hairdo and checkerboard look for her “Slow Clap” single remix with Sweetie.
Mega Mentor Snoop and his DJ did it in the round, as the D-O-G-G rolled onto the stage on a tricked-out three-wheel lowrider bicycle for his chilled out soul rap “Sitting on Blades.”
Bieber, his hair twisted up into hornlike top braids, cruised into the frame in a classic convertible for his low-key performance of recent singles “Peaches” and “Hold On” with a live band.
Levine and Maroon 5 were surrounded by a dripping forest of digital flowers during “Beautiful Mistakes,” with the guest verse from Megan Thee Stallion popping up on the screen behind them.
Ben Platt started alone for his single “Imagine,” and was then joined by a group of dancers reacting to his emotional vocals.
Rhett kept it humble and no-frills for his rootsy single “Country Again.”
Daigle raised the roof with her inspiring “Hold On to Me,” backed by a gospel choir.
The coaches and their charges also took the stage, with Jonas strumming an acoustic guitar for an unplugged version of the Foo Fighters’ “Best of You” with fourth-place finisher Rachel Mac.
John Legend and fifth place finisher Victor Solomon put on a soul showcase on Donny Hathaway’s “Someday We’ll All Be Free.”
Runner-up Kenzie Wheeler and Kelly Clarkson dueted on Keith Whitley’s “When You Say Nothing At All.”
Ballerini helped Wheeler get a bit more shine on their duet of “Half of My Hometown.”
Third-place finisher Jordan Matthew Young went old-school country for George Strait’s “All My Ex’s Live in Texas” with Shelton.
Shelton was at it again with winner Anthony for a country soul-drenched collab on the Fine Young Cannibals’ “She Drives Me Crazy.”
