Halsey Defends “Americana” Amid Backlash Over Sydney Sweeney’s Ad Campaign

Halsey Champions Americana Amid Sydney Sweeney’s Ad Controversy
Halsey has voiced her unwavering support for her latest film, Americana, amidst the uproar surrounding her co-star Sydney Sweeney’s recent advertising campaign with American Eagle.
The 30-year-old singer and actor, who co-leads the Tony Tost–directed crime thriller, used her Instagram Story on August 21 to champion the project, which has sparked online debate and calls for boycotts based on Sweeney’s promotional endeavors.
On her Story, Halsey urged followers to attend screenings, sharing the film’s poster and writing, “Catch this movie—Tony Tost has crafted a remarkable homage to a genre he understands deeply. His artistry and vision far transcend the fleeting chatter of daily gossip tabloids.”
She added, “Tony is an extraordinary filmmaker who assembled a dedicated, talented team to bring this project to life. For true cinephiles, the integrity of the art form must come first.”
Her remarks appear to address criticism of Sweeney’s American Eagle ad, which debuted in late July. Viewers noted the ad’s play on “great jeans” versus “great genes” and its focus on Sweeney’s blonde hair and blue eyes—imagery some likened to eugenics-era propaganda.
In a follow-up post, Halsey conceded, “I acknowledge the weight of our words in today’s climate. Yet I find it unjust for media outlets to mercilessly attack a diligent director and his crew for a film entirely separate from a misguided marketing slogan.”
She concluded, “If it’s unclear whom I’m defending, I invite a closer examination.”
Americana—which follows a group pursuing a rare Native American artifact—opened in over 1,100 theaters on August 15, grossing a modest $500,000 at the box office. The ensemble cast also includes Paul Walter Hauser, Eric Dane, Zahn McClarnon, and Simon Rex.
Director Tony Tost, making his feature debut, addressed the controversy on X on August 14, remarking, “The beauty of cinema lies in its permanence beyond the era of its release. Having seen my own debut overshadowed by fleeting trends, I’m eager to see how Americana endures once this moment fades.”
As of publication, Sweeney had not responded publicly. This marks her second recent marketing misstep—her June collaboration with Dr. Squatch, promoting soap infused with her own bathwater, drew criticism for being tone-deaf and exploitative.
