Imagine a world where H.E.R., Kehlani and Zendaya were in a band together — because we almost lived in it.
The three Hollywood mainstays were running in a smaller Bay Area circle back in the day, which fans were reminded of earlier this week when an old photo of Kehlani and H.E.R. attending a music festival surfaced online. But Grammy- and Oscar-winning singer H.E.R. let everyone in on how the two could’ve been in the same band growing up, with Zendaya potentially being thrown into the mix.
“Dylan Wiggins, who is D’wayne Wiggins‘ son from Tony! Toni! Toné! We used to be in a band together,” H.E.R. said in an interview on The Carlos Watson Show. “We used to perform together when we were really young and Kehlani was actually in our band. We all used to sing together. Zendaya was going to be in it at one point. But yeah, they all grew up together. I came into the picture in Oakland, and we used to perform together.”
Wiggins and H.E.R. were two out of the six members of the teen band PopLyfe, which went on to compete on season 6 of America’s Got Talent and finish in fourth place. Judge Piers Morgan encouraged Kehlani to pursue a solo career, telling her in the semifinals, “You’ve got real talent, but I don’t think you need the group.”
Zendaya and H.E.R. recently reunited at the 93rd Academy Awards in April, when the Euphoria actress presented the 23-year-old singer-songwriter with her first Oscar when she, D’Mile and Tiara Thomas won best original song with “Fight for You” from Judas and the Black Messiah.
H.E.R. will band together with DJ Khaled and Migos at the 2021 Billboard Music Awards on May 23 to perform their collaboration “We Going Crazy.” The show will air live Sunday, May 23, on NBC at 8 p.m. ET/5 p.m. PT.
