H.E.R. Reveals She’s Working On a Reggae Project: Exclusive Clip

In addition to working on her just-released debut album, Back of My Mind, Grammy-winning singer-songwriter H.E.R. is revealing in an interview with Apple Music’s Ebro Darden on Wednesday (July 7) that she’s also working on a “reggae project,” and Billboard has the exclusive first look from the chat.

“You’re going to get that very soon,” she teased of the untitled collection whose release date has not yet been announced. Though she’s mentioned it a bit before, H.E.R. said that after releasing the island-vibes song “Do to Me” and teaming up with Skip Marley on “Slow Down” — both in 2020 —  she realized how much she loved Caribbean music.

“I’ve always known that but just really getting into it and celebrating that culture,” said the multitalented performer born Gabriella Wilson. “I really wanted to like go all in, so I’m working on that right now. It’s been in the works for a while. Honestly, I love Caribbean music. I didn’t really have a full appreciation of it until I moved to New York, until I went to the East Coast, and I got into dancehall and I got into some of the more uptempo club records. I literally have been a huge fan of reggae since I was a young kid.”

The project is coming “very soon,” according to Oscar-winner H.E.R., who was just invited to join the Motion Picture Academy along with Janet Jackson, Jon Batiste and Leslie Odom Jr., among others.

Watch Billboard‘s exclusive clip from the interview below; the full chat with Ebro airs at 4:30 p.m. ET on Apple Music 1.
