H.E.R. dropped the funky “We Made It” single on Friday (June 11) and revealed that her anticipated full-length debut, Back Of My Mind, is due out on June 18.
“I’ve been really feelin’ like/ Always been a long time/ There was early mornings, late nights/ We was prayin’ for the sunshine/ Oh and this whole time, I’ve been at it/ If you want it outside, you won’t get it/ Can’t break me, I won’t let it,” she sings over jittery drums and keyboard washes on the new single.
“Run red lights and following the signs/ It’s been a long ride and I just can’t believe/ Can’t believe we made it,” the singer adds on the dreamy chorus of the song co-produced by DJ Camper and Ronald “Flippa” Colson.
“People always ask me, ‘What’s the message? Where does this come from? Is it personal experience?’” the singer says in a 55-second black-and-white trailer for the project. “And it’s always the thoughts that sit in the back of my mind. It’s always things that I’ve been through, things that I go through, or what I feel, and all those thoughts that I’m afraid to say sometimes,” she continues. “Things that feel too honest or too vulnerable or too emotional or too aggressive … It’s all of those things that have been in the back of my mind for the past few years since my first project. It’s like a peek into my soul.”
“We Made It” is the second track H.E.R. has released from the album this year, following on the heels of the Chris Brown collab “Come Through.”
