R&B star and award magnet H.E.R., composers Atticus Ross and Atli Örvarsson, and many others were honored at the 37th annual BMI Film, TV & Visual Media Awards on Monday (July 12).
BMI marked the wins with a virtual celebration featuring special video content on its website.
With six wins this year, Icelandic composer Örvarsson took home the most crystals for his work on NBC’s Chicago franchise, CBS’ FBI’s Most Wanted, and Apple TV+’s Defending Jacob.
Industry veteran Mark Mothersbaugh — who famously composed the music for Nickelodeon’s cult classic Rugrats — took home five awards for his more recent work on Bravo’s Dirty John, FX’s What We Do in the Shadows, and Netflix’s viral hit Tiger King.
In the film world, Ross added another win to accompany his Oscar, Golden Globe, and BAFTA awards with a BMI crystal for composing the score for Pixar’s animated hit Soul. Meanwhile, H.E.R., D’Mile, and Tiara Thomas won their first BMI film award with the Oscar-winning “Fight For You,” which was featured in Judas and the Black Messiah.
“We’re incredibly proud to honor BMI’s exceptional composers and celebrate their outstanding musical contributions that have elevated the year’s most popular films, series and other streaming media to new creative heights,” said Natalie Baartz, BMI’s vice president, creative, film, TV & visual media, in a statement.
In addition to announcing the winners, the organization introduced three new awards: BMI streaming documentary award, BMI film festival award and BMI streaming film award.
