Frank Sinatra’s 1955 Classic “In the Wee Small Hours” Reissued on Vinyl for Its 70th Anniversary — His “Melancholy Masterpiece”

Blue Note’s Tone Poet Audiophile Vinyl Series will reissue Frank Sinatra’s seminal 1955 Capitol Records record In the Wee Small Hours on November 14, 2025, in commemoration of the album’s 70th anniversary. Hailed as Sinatra’s phrase-setting, introspective masterpiece, the record was inducted into the Grammy Hall of Fame in 1984 and helped define the notion of the pop “concept album,” later inspiring melancholic releases such as Linda Ronstadt’s unexpected 1983 success What’s New.

Produced by Voyle Gilmore with arrangements by Nelson Riddle, In the Wee Small Hours was Sinatra’s third full-length project for Capitol, following the 1954 releases Songs for Young Lovers and Swing Easy!. Sinatra approached the record as a cohesive statement rather than a collection of singles, issuing it initially as both two 10-inch discs and a single 12-inch LP—one of the early examples of the 12-inch format in popular music. Its popularity helped establish the 12-inch LP as the standard in the years that followed.

The original LP rose to No. 2 on a pre-Billboard 200 chart and reinforced Sinatra’s mid-1950s renaissance, coming on the heels of his 1953 Capitol signing and his Academy Award–winning performance in From Here to Eternity (1954).

The Tone Poet edition was produced by Joe Harley and mastered by Kevin Gray from the original analog masters. Pressed on 180-gram vinyl at Record Technology Inc. (RTI), this release is housed in a deluxe gatefold tip-on jacket featuring session photography by William Claxton and Ken Veeder, and includes an essay by Rita Kirwan.

Sinatra continued to develop album-length artistic statements across the decade with records such as Songs for Swingin’ Lovers! (1956), Where Are You? (1957), Frank Sinatra Sings for Only the Lonely (1958) and No One Cares (1959). Widely regarded as a towering figure in traditional pop, he won the Grammy Award for Album of the Year three times and received a Grammy Lifetime Achievement Award in 1965, following in the footsteps of Bing Crosby. Sinatra was also honored with the Kennedy Center Honors in 1983 and passed away in 1998 at the age of 82.
