Former CEO Sues The Wiggles Over “Hot Potato”

The Wiggles have found themselves embroiled in a legal battle at Australia’s Federal Court, as former CEO Luke O’Neill accuses the group of wrongful termination and unpaid bonuses.

O’Neill, who became the ensemble’s first-ever chief executive in January 2024, was dismissed in late May 2025. His lawsuit names Wiggles Holdings Pty Ltd, co-founder Anthony Field and general counsel Matthew Salgo, alleging breaches of the Fair Work Act and failure to honour contractual bonus commitments.

According to court documents reported by The Guardian, O’Neill contends he was sidelined from critical meetings—most notably a major toy licensing session—and publicly undermined by Field during a staff gathering on February 18.

After his termination, the company paid him A$86,266 (roughly US$56,000) as a final bonus, an amount O’Neill asserts falls short of what he is owed under his employment agreement.

In a statement provided to The Music Network, The Wiggles reaffirmed their 35-year legacy of delivering high-quality children’s entertainment and indicated they will vigorously defend the claims once their formal Defence is lodged.

O’Neill had initially joined as a consultant on April 1, 2023, before his formal appointment as CEO on January 8, 2024. His remit included spearheading digital innovation, expanding global distribution channels and growing the group’s commercial operations.

The case is assigned to Justice Michael Lee, with the first case management hearing set for September 8, 2025.
