For the First Time in VMA History, 2 Female Collabs Are Nominated for Video of the Year

Female artists made history in the 2021 MTV Video Music Awards nominations. For the first time, two female collaborations — “WAP” by Cardi B featuring Megan Thee Stallion, and “Kiss Me More” by Doja Cat featuring SZA — are nominated for video of the year.

Here are all the times a collab by two or more female artists was nominated for video of the year:

1998: “The Boy Is Mine,” Brandy & Monica

The video lost to Madonna’s “Ray of Light.” It was also nominated for best R&B video.

2001: “Lady Marmalade,” Christina Aguilera, Lil Kim, Mýa & P!nk (featuring Missy Elliott)

This is the only all-female collab to win in this category to date. The clip from the box-office smash Moulin Rouge! also won for best video from a film. It was nominated for best pop video and best dance video, but lost in both categories to *NSYNC’s “Pop.”

2010: “Telephone,” Beyoncé featuring Lady Gaga

The video lost to Gaga’s epic “Bad Romance.” The video won best collaboration. The pair’s “Video Phone (Extended Remix)” was nominated for best female video and best pop video, but lost in both categories to “Bad Romance.”

2014: “Fancy,” Iggy Azalea featuring Charli XCX

The video lost to Miley Cyrus’ “Wrecking Ball.” The Clueless-inspired video was also nominated for best female video and best pop video.

2020: “Rain on Me,” Lady Gaga & Ariana Grande

The video lost to The Weeknd’s “Blinding Lights.” It won song of the year and best collaboration and was nominated for best pop. Gaga took artist of the year and a special award, the Tricon Award.
