Foo Fighters Tease Riff-Heavy New Song and Announce First Live Show with New Drummer Ilan Rubin

The Foo Fighters have revealed plans for a surprise, all-ages show that will serve as the band’s first official live appearance with drummer Ilan Rubin.

The group announced on Sep. 12, 2025, that they will play the Fremont Theater in San Luis Obispo on Sep. 13, 2025 — an intimate, 900-capacity performance that marks Rubin’s debut with the band following his arrival earlier this summer.

Sharing a simple poster and the message “SOUND ON. See you Saturday in San Luis Obispo,” on Instagram, the band accompanied the announcement with a short teaser that many fans believe includes a newly recorded track.

Reaction was swift and enthusiastic: listeners praised the heavy, riff-driven tone in the clip and compared it favorably to the Foo Fighters’ classic live energy. Several fans also suggested the new snippet echoes passages the group has jammed in past concerts, with one noting similarities to a riff they played during a Birmingham set a few years back.

In the days before the San Luis Obispo gig, the band dropped additional playful teasers on social media — including a wink to “Weird Al” Yankovic’s Cal Poly connection and a photo of Dave Grohl wearing a Boo Boo Records T-shirt, nodding to a beloved local shop.

After stepping away from touring in September 2024, the Foo Fighters are scheduled to resume international dates, with shows planned in Indonesia (Oct. 2), Singapore (Oct. 4), Japan (Oct. 7, 8 and 10) and Mexico City (Nov. 14), 2025.

The group released their 11th studio album, But Here We Are, in 2023. In July, the band officially confirmed Ilan Rubin as their new drummer after a period with session and touring drummer Josh Freese.
