First Trailer Released for Suppressed ChatGPT Movie

Artificial intelligence has moved from a Silicon Valley buzzword to a daily reality for most people. OpenAI remains the most recognizable name from the boom, and Hollywood has decided to make a movie about the people who created it.

The success of The Social Network in 2010 proved that the messy origins of major technology companies make for compelling drama. Since then, films have explored the founding of BlackBerry, the rivalry between Ford and Ferrari, and Nike’s pursuit of Michael Jordan in Air. Artificial follows that formula with an OpenAI biopic featuring a minimalist title.

The first teaser for Artificial has arrived, offering a mysterious look at the creators of ChatGPT.

The first look goes full AI apocalypse

The initial footage shares few plot details, relying instead on grandiose voiceovers about the importance of ChatGPT.

Andrew Garfield stars as OpenAI CEO Sam Altman. He spends much of the trailer wandering through a futuristic bunker filled with hydroponics and weapons. The teaser does not explain why Altman has access to an underground bunker or assault rifles, or how these elements relate to ChatGPT.

Ominous voiceovers play over the footage to suggest the beginning of the end of civilization. The lines include statements that a machine was created to solve world problems, that Pandora’s box was opened, and that countries will fall while industries collapse.

Those apocalyptic themes frame a story about tech executives arguing over corporate leadership. Artificial centers on a five-day period in November 2023 when Altman was fired as CEO of OpenAI. That departure threw the company into chaos before his reinstatement days later, involving Microsoft and threats of mass resignations from OpenAI employees.

The film’s off-screen history matches the drama of its subject matter.

Amazon MGM Studios originally developed the project, but Amazon walked away from the nearly completed film. That decision drew scrutiny because Amazon had recently entered a major partnership with OpenAI that involved a reported 50 billion dollar investment. Officials have not confirmed a connection between the two events.

After Netflix, A24, and Focus passed on the project, Neon acquired distribution rights. Neon plans to give Artificial a theatrical release and an awards campaign.

The film arrives in theaters on Christmas Day. Audiences can spend the holiday watching Andrew Garfield’s Sam Altman explore a bunker while characters warn that nations will fall.
