Toho has released the first full trailer for Godzilla Minus Zero. This direct sequel to Takashi Yamazaki’s Oscar-winning 2023 Godzilla reboot picks up two years after Minus One as post-World War II Japan continues recovering.

“We didn’t finish the job like we thought,” says Kenji Noda (Hidetaka Yoshioka), a former Naval weapons engineer who helped design the ingenious explosive decompression attack against Godzilla used in the last movie.

Despite seemingly blowing up, the atomic lizard returns to demolish Japan. The country assembles a new task force in response. Another subtitle reads, “There is no third time. Everything ends here.” Minus Zero is marketed as the last of the Minus films.

The trailer reunites viewers with Shikishima (Ryunosuke Kamiki) and Noriko (Minami Hamabe). Shikishima was a would-be kamikaze pilot struggling to live, and Noriko was a single mother turned thief who was nursing psychological wounds.

Godzilla Minus Zero is the first Japanese production filmed for IMAX. The trailer expands to a 1:43:1 aspect ratio to highlight this format. An aerial battle features Shikishima back in the cockpit, followed by a shot of Godzilla falling from the sky. Noda remarks, “This isn’t Godzilla we are talking about.” The movie arrives in theaters on November 6.

Godzilla and Kong, buddies now, race towards an unseen threat in Godzilla x Kong: The New Empire

How does this relate to the last Godzilla movie, Godzilla x Kong: The New Empire?

Godzilla Minus Zero and Godzilla X Kong: The New Empire take place in separate canonical universes and involve different production companies. Godzilla Minus One was the 33rd Japanese-produced Godzilla film from Toho, the original rights holder of the series. Legendary Pictures acquired separate licensing rights to make its own Godzilla movies, creating the Monsterverse. That shared universe spans Godzilla (2014), Kong: Skull Island, the Monarch: Legacy of Monsters television series, and other titles.

Legendary Pictures produces Godzilla x Kong: Supernova as the sequel to 2024’s New Empire. That entry in the Monsterverse releases on March 26, 2027.
