A reporter for TheGamer published a piece about Ubisoft and the cancellation of an Assassin’s Creed entry that would have taken place during the U.S. Civil War, centering on a Black slave who fights for justice and opposes the emergence of the Ku Klux Klan. According to Game File, the studio’s French office opted to halt development, unwilling to risk the fallout after criticism surrounding the Black samurai Yasuke in Shadows and the United States’ unsettled political climate.
TheGamer’s writer denounced Ubisoft’s leadership as “cowards” for discarding what she described as a genuinely compelling concept.
I won’t hide it: Ubisoft’s executives were frightened. With a rising surge of conservative populism in the games industry attacking anything deemed progressive, and a broader rightward tilt in global politics, the company chose the easy path and cancelled the project outright, despite widespread excitement about the concept.
