Far Cry 6 narrative director on Cuba-inspired Yara: “When you’re talking about guerrilla warfare, you go to Cuba”

Ubisoft talked just a little bit about Far Cry 6’s fictional nation and why it was impressed by Cuba.

Far Cry 6 takes the sequence again to an unique, tropical location. The fictional nation of Yara is dominated by dictator Anton Castillo, performed by Giancarlo Esposito. If you noticed some Cuba inspirations within the reveal trailer, you’re not alone.

That’s as a result of Cuba was certainly the primary inspiration behind the setting and tradition of Far Cry 6. “We wanted to tell a story about revolution, and when you tell a story about revolution, you’re talking about guerrilla warfare,” narrative director Navid Khavari defined on the Ubisoft blog.

“When you’re talking about guerrilla warfare, you go to Cuba. We were very, very lucky to be able to fly down to Cuba. I spent about a month down there with the team, circumnavigating the island. We got to meet so many amazing people and experience the music and the culture, and we also met actual former guerrillas.”

This can be why the automobiles and among the weapons look very outdated, as a result of Cuba – and by extension, Yara – is basically frozen in time because of many years of commerce embargoes and sanctions.

“And that really was the jumping-off point, because for our island of Yara, not only did we want to tell a story of a modern guerrilla revolution, but also we want to tell a story about an island that is almost frozen in time, like a living postcard from the ‘60s that players can experience and walk through,” he added.

Far Cry 6, which followers suppose is a prequel to Far Cry 3, releases February 18 on PC, PS4, PS5, Xbox One, Xbox Series X and Stadia.
