Fan-Made Gears of War Remaster Redux Adds 64-Bit Support and Technology Upgrades

Switching to 64-bit should eliminate most crashes in Gears of War: Redux.

In late September, modder PunishedWolf announced the release of update 1.1.3439 for Gears of War: Redux. This fan-made remaster mod aims to revive the classic 2006 shooter. It adds modern features to the project, such as 4K resolution and ultrawide display support, along with a server browser, split-screen cooperative play, maps from Gears of War 2, and a 50-wave Horde mode.

With update 1.1.3439, Gears of War: Redux received support for 64-bit operating systems, meaning players are no longer restricted by the 4 GB RAM limit:

This exact limitation caused most of the crashes due to “out of memory” errors on large maps and during long Horde mode runs. The launcher automatically selects the correct version, but you can switch back to 32-bit at any time. The 64-bit version requires 64-bit Visual C++ and DirectX libraries—the launcher checks for them and will notify you if anything is missing. Users of RTX Remix are currently recommended to stay on the 32-bit version.

In addition, Gears of War: Redux supports NVIDIA DLSS and DLAA technologies for RTX graphics cards and AMD FSR for all graphics cards. The modder also reported fixing several technical issues and updating a number of maps.

The Gears of War: Redux modification is distributed for free through the ModDB service.

Meanwhile, developer The Coalition is preparing for the release of a full new installment in the franchise, Gears of War: E-Day. The standard launch of the game is expected on October 6, but owners of the Premium Edition will be able to jump in five days early.
