Delving into the Side Adventures of Kingdom Come: Deliverance II

The central narrative of Kingdom Come: Deliverance II unfolds a grand saga that matches the expansive ambition of Warhorse’s upcoming sequel. Yet, for those who experienced the original game, it’s well known that the side quests are just as crucial in animating this richly detailed world.

Keeping this in mind, we engaged with the developers at Warhorse to highlight some of their cherished side quests from the sequel. Ranging from the sinister to the playful, here’s an exciting preview of four such journeys!

Although we’re thrilled to offer you a glimpse into some of the game’s side quests, be aware that spoilers are present. The main quest remains unchanged in this article, but avert your gaze if you prefer to keep every detail a surprise before the launch.

The Mouth of Hell

The Mouth of Hell is a notably grim quest that challenges you to probe a rumored “gateway to hell” that supposedly emerged amidst a mining catastrophe. To add to the mystery, a series of gruesome cattle mutilations has left a bewildered community fearing a link between the two occurrences.

As Henry, you’ll uncover this grisly scenario in one of two routes. While traversing a village, you may come upon the distressing scene of butchered livestock, prompting you to aid the distressed villagers. Alternatively, your explorations could lead you directly to the mine, where the atmosphere is tainted by the stench of sulfur and decay.

Engaging with the locals to accept the quest, you will face a pivotal decision. The young priest Marian urges a rational investigation, while the mining foreman Vladimir advocates adherence to ancient “pagan” rituals to pacify the infernal powers supposedly arising from the pit.

“This is the only quest in the game that could genuinely be characterized as survival horror,” explains quest designer and scripter Karel Kolman. “It immerses players in an eerie, forsaken mine where lurking hazards amplify tension.

“While fear is a prominent theme, the quest also weaves in elements of mystery and investigation, offering multiple outcomes based on player choices. Success hinges on the player’s ability to decipher the clues and unravel the enigma or succumb to superstition.”

Forbidden Fruit

Forbidden Fruit is intertwined in a series of episodes where Henry seeks entry to a wedding without an invitation. One path leads through an alliance with the cunning miller Krezjl, who requires assistance in acquiring saltpeter for a concealed experiment. Owing to millers’ notoriety for trickery and deceit, this alliance poses one of many ethical decisions players will encounter in Kingdom Come: Deliverance II.

Should you decide to support Krezjl, you’ll be directed to a lye pit, maintained by the local gravedigger for disposing of dead animals—and conveniently, a prime source of saltpeter. However, the gravedigger demands some help with his morbid duties before leading Henry to the pit.

“The quest showcases some of my favorite supporting characters: the gravedigger Ignác and the miller’s assistant Bonka!” shares QA tester Petr Šindelář. “Thanks to their endearing personalities, I easily immerse myself in the game and savor the tales of ordinary town folk.”

The Kuttenberg Tournament

The Kuttenberg Tournament transcends the typical side quest, unfolding as a grand spectacle repeated weekly for participants. It features audacious combat scenarios where you’ll validate your skill with various weapons and full armor.

This event honors the combat techniques and gear you muster during your Bohemian adventures. Your involvement begins with resolving a rivalry between two fencing guilds, assisting the victors in establishing the tournament alongside the city council.

“From a gameplay perspective, it’s a chance to partake in fencing duels celebrated with grandeur and intensity, engaging opponents under fair conditions,” says narrative designer Jonáš Chmátal when recounting his favorite side quest.

“In terms of world-building and immersive realism, it’s noteworthy that the tournament exists for all gallant citizens, not just for the player, manifesting in all its splendor regardless of the player’s participation!

“Crafting an elaborate scenario that seamlessly integrates into the bustling life of Kuttenberg’s environment posed the greatest challenge. Moreover, we strived for innovation, introducing a nifty feature where NPC fighters, upon their victory, collect rewards authentically. We’re incredibly proud of this achievement!”

In Vino Veritas

In this quest, Henry aids an aspiring winemaker from Kutna Hora in capturing success within the competitive wine industry. Embarking on a mission to pinpoint a secret ingredient, you’ll delve into the nuances of viticulture, mastering wine production, and even putting your acquired knowledge to the test!

Your assignment initiates upon meeting Casper Rudolf, a novice vineyard proprietor distributing complimentary wine in Kutna Hora’s Vintner’s Street. Struggling against the town’s leading wine, Casper entrusts you to secure the unique ingredient that sets it apart. Being a prominent figure himself, he needs an inconspicuous outsider like Henry to succeed.

“This quest is exceptional due to its novel focus on winemaking and oenology—a rare theme in most games!” asserts QA tester Ivana Růžičková. “Participants gain a deep understanding of vineyard operations and wine tasting, appreciating both the artistry and labor behind viniculture.

“The quest’s excitement stems from its adaptability. Players can tackle tasks in varied sequences or bypass some altogether, tailoring their experience according to their play style. Throughout, they engage in clever dialogues with intriguing and vibrant characters, enriching the storyline’s allure.”

The sampling of side quest stories highlighted here only scratches the surface of the numerous adventures awaiting beyond the main storyline of Kingdom Come: Deliverance II. With the anticipated release on February 4th closing in, your chance to unravel every narrative yourself is just around the corner.
