The Thing with Feathers is a British psychological drama with horror elements about a family trying to live after a sudden loss. An unnamed father is left to raise two young sons after his wife dies unexpectedly. He must support the children, manage their home, and continue working as an illustrator while the family’s routines fall apart. A huge, human-like Crow appears to emerge from the pages of the book he is drawing. The unwanted visitor stalks the apartment, taunts Dad, and gives the family’s grief a frightening physical form.

This is not a conventional creature-attack story. Crow can be threatening, mocking, and strangely purposeful, forcing the characters to face feelings they cannot yet explain. The film moves between intimate family drama, dark fantasy, and abrupt horror imagery. Its treatment of bereavement is deliberately uncomfortable rather than sentimental.

Book, cast, and filmmakers

The source is Max Porter’s 2015 debut novella, which alternates between the voices of Dad, the Boys, and Crow. Southern’s screen adaptation translates that fragmented structure into visual sequences and changes Dad into an artist whose drawings help shape the intruder. Southern is credited as both writer and director.

Cumberbatch plays Dad. Real-life brothers Richard and Henry Boxall portray his sons, and Thewlis voices Crow. Vinette Robinson, Jessie Cave, and Sam Spruell also appear. The running time is 98 minutes. Film4 and the British Film Institute backed the production, which screened at the Sundance Film Festival and the Berlinale before its late-2025 theatrical release.
