Enthusiast Ports Hideo Kojima’s Silent Hills P.T. to PC
Work on the unofficial port is gradually moving forward.
Players have recently been talking about Silent Hills P.T. again. Hideo Kojima’s horror demo was unveiled many years ago. It was supposed to serve as a teaser for a new installment in the franchise, but Silent Hills was ultimately canceled. Now, an enthusiast known as LoreanXavier is porting the demo from consoles to PC.
He is developing a native Windows port. LoreanXavier emphasizes that this is not an emulator, wrapper, or remake. He is recreating the game logic and rendering using C++ and Vulkan by reverse-engineering the PlayStation 4 executable (exe) file.
The project will run using the original game data. Players will need to provide their own copy of the game, or disk image, which prevents the port from being shut down for copyright infringement since no game assets are included in the archive. LoreanXavier is aiming for a 1-to-1 level of accuracy.
The developer has released gameplay footage:
LoreanXavier explained how he verified the 1-to-1 accuracy. He noted that a bug involving the rendering of certain game assets was fixed during the process:
The original runs in an emulator with scripted gamepad input and recorded camera positions, while the port renders those same moments from the exact same positions so that every single frame can be compared. Along the way, I found and fixed a texture streaming bug in shadPS4 that caused walls and floors in P.T. to display with black stripes in the emulator.
LoreanXavier has not yet specified a release date. This version supports frame rates of 60+ FPS and AMD FSR 3.1 technology.
