Though Taylor Swift and fiancé Travis Kelce appear to be a perfect match, Ed Sheeran — a longtime friend and collaborator — revealed he learned about their engagement the same way most people did.

Speaking with Andy Cohen before his SiriusXM Small Stage Series performance on September 24 at New York City’s Irving Plaza, Sheeran explained how he first discovered the news. The couple’s engagement was announced publicly on August 26.

When Cohen pressed him in a rapid-fire round of questions, Sheeran gave a one-word reply for how he found out: “Instagram.”

Cohen’s response — incredulous that Sheeran hadn’t even received a heads-up direct message — drew a simple shake of the head and another brief “no” from the singer.

He also admitted he hasn’t heard Swift’s forthcoming album, The Life of a Showgirl, and that he hasn’t received any save-the-date for a wedding — though one seems likely given their long friendship.

Sheeran and Swift have collaborated for more than a decade. Their first duet, “Everything Has Changed,” appeared on Swift’s 2012 album Red and reached the Billboard Hot 100. They’ve since teamed up on tracks including “The Joker and the Queen,” “Run (Taylor’s Version)” and “End Game,” each of which charted on the Hot 100.

Sheeran supported Swift on the 2013 Red tour, and the pair frequently joined each other onstage during that run. In conversations over the years he’s described how close they became while living and working in Nashville, spending long stretches together during that period.

He’s said they now see one another a few times a year and arrange lengthy catch-ups — often lasting several hours — rather than trying to cram everything into brief meetings.
