Durand Jones & The Indications Reveal New Album With Single ‘Witchoo’

Durand Jones & The Indications are back with their third studio album and some modern soul. The group will release Private Space on July 30 on Dead Oceans in association with Colemine Records.

Lead single “Witchoo” showcases the band’s new lean towards synthy modern soul and disco beats. The combined vocals of Durand Jones and drummer Aaron Frazer’s falsetto help the five-piece — filled out by Blake Rhein (guitar), Steve Okonski (keys) and Mike Montgomery (bass) —  blend classic sounds with a modern twist.

Private Space is the most complete picture yet of who we are as a band — where we’ve been and where we’re going,” Frazer tells Billboard in a statement. “We spent a lot of the last year separated from each other, stuck in our separate boxes. It was tough in so many ways, but it also shook us out of our rhythm and allowed us to look inward and experiment with different sounds and new approaches to our songwriting. When we finally met back up in Bloomington to write as a unit, it was a great reminder that together we’re able to create music that can defy era or genre. This is not a revival; it’s new, it’s alive and we can’t wait to show you.”

While Private Space is an intentional departure from The Indications’ roots in ‘60s funk and soul, its exploratory vibe is true to their origins and evolving tastes. “There’s a lot of the band’s original DNA, but it’s not a time capsule,” says Rhein.

The new album marks the group’s most uptempo collection yet and takes inspiration from Stevie Wonder, The Isley Brothers, Raphael Saadiq and more. With assistance from an eight-piece string section and vibraphonist Joel Ross, the 10-track record both recalls a glittering disco ball and serves as a meditation on the isolation and loss of 2020.

This fall, Durand Jones & The Indications will bring Private Space on the road with an 11-date trek launching on Sept. 7 at Paradise Rock Club in Boston. Throughout September, they will hit Pennsylvania, New York, Chicago, Minnesota, and California. The current dates will close out on Sept. 24 at Ohana Fest in Dana Point, Calif. Tickets go on sale Friday (May 14) at 10 a.m. local time. Check out a full list of dates below..
