Dropout Snubbed by 2026 Emmys Despite Hosting the Best Game Show on Television
Dropout has evolved far beyond its roots as a spin-off of CollegeHumor. It has matured into a powerhouse of comedy talent and home to an actual play scene so formidable it can sell out venues like Madison Square Garden. Yet, despite this massive cultural footprint, the platform remains conspicuously absent from the Emmys.
In a push for critical recognition, CEO and Game Changer host Sam Reich even hosted a “For Your Consideration” showcase this past May. The company campaigned heavily, submitting both Game Changer and Vic Michaelis’ Very Important People across 11 different categories. However, when the Television Academy unveiled its 2026 nominations this Wednesday, Dropout was left off the list entirely.
Now in its eighth season, the premise of Game Changer remains delightfully subversive: contestants arrive on set with no knowledge of the rules or even the game they are about to play. Reich occasionally dips into the chaos himself, notably during his swap with Jeremy Culhane in the season 7 finale, “Rulette.” Despite these creative swings, the academy favored industry staples like Jeopardy! and Jimmy Kimmel’s reboot of Who Wants to Be a Millionaire.
Similarly, the third season of Very Important People showcased impressive improvisation, with Michaelis interviewing guests transformed by elaborate prosthetics—such as Rekha Shankar’s viral Mother Hot Dog. While Michaelis sought recognition in the lead comedy actress category and the show contended for technical awards like production design and costuming, the nominations ultimately went elsewhere.
Dropout’s trajectory suggests that institutional recognition is likely inevitable as their influence continues to grow. In the interim, the team shows no signs of slowing their experimental streak. From launching a physical Blu-ray and a 24/7 streaming channel to licensing cult classics like Don’t Hug Me I’m Scared, they are aggressively expanding their horizons. Their recent Kickstarter, which raised nearly $7 million for a physical Game Changer home edition, proves that while the Emmys may not be watching, their massive, dedicated fanbase certainly is.
