On August 21, Barrymore treated followers to a nostalgic Instagram snapshot from the 2017 shoot of SZA’s breakout single “Drew Barrymore.” The two stars, wrapped in chic coats, strolled down a sunlit boulevard, offering gentle smiles for the camera.

“Throwback to this ‘pinch-me’ moment,” Barrymore wrote. “I still can’t believe you composed such a beautiful song bearing my name. I feel like the luckiest person alive—your talent is unmatched.”

Released over eight years ago as the lead single from SZA’s debut album Ctrl—which peaked at No. 3 on the Billboard 200—the track has never graced the Hot 100 but endures as a defining fan favorite.

During a January appearance on The Drew Barrymore Show, SZA finally explained why she chose Barrymore’s name. Growing up, she admired the actress’s authenticity—her endearing quirks, her imperfect yet heartfelt smile—which inspired SZA to embrace her own uniqueness.

The pair also recalled the music video’s poignant cameo. As SZA collected herself on an outdoor staircase, Barrymore passed by, offering a reassuring nod that turned a brief moment into an unforgettable gesture.

“I was so thrilled to be there for you,” Barrymore reflected, and SZA responded, “I couldn’t believe you showed up.”
