U.S. President Donald Trump has once again announced plans to levy 100% tariffs on films produced outside the United States.
“Our movie industry has been stolen from the United States of America by other countries — like a candy stolen from a child,” Trump wrote on the social network Truth Social.
Major American studios have not commented on Trump’s remarks. The president first mentioned the idea of tariffs in May of this year. He has not clarified how such a system would function. In 2023, the U.S. film industry posted a positive trade balance of $15.3 billion, with exports to international markets totaling $22.6 billion.
